Brenda Chomey

Brenda Chomey has over 17 years of healthcare and legal experience encompassing front-line provision of healthcare, teaching, clinical research coordination, nursing management and administration as well as the chairing of inquiry, dispute resolution, and investigation tribunals.

Ms. Chomey holds a M.Sc. (Bioethics) from McGill University, a LL.B. with a focus on alternative dispute resolution, intellectual property and health law from Queen’s University, and a B.Sc. (Nursing) from the University of Alberta coupled with specialty certification in the Peri-Operative Environment and Rehabilitation Nursing.

Ms. Chomey was appointed as a Hearing Adjudicator within the Correctional Services Division by the Alberta Solicitor General’s Office for a three-year term in March 2008. As well, Ms. Chomey is serving a three-year appointment as a Human Rights Commissioner in the Province of Alberta.

Prior to her current Ministerial appointments Ms. Chomey worked as the Executive Associate to the Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at the Misericordia Community Hospital. She also was a Clinical Research Coordinator for the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Alberta and worked as a sessional Clinical Nursing Instructor for over five years with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. As a student-at-law, Ms. Chomey articled in a general practice law firm in which personal injury law and Canada Pension Plan appeals became her focus in view of her strong healthcare background. Upon completion of her articles she fulfilled the role of Health Portfolio Officer with the Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner’s Office where she was actively involved in conducting investigations relating to allegations of breaches of health privacy.
